About the team/role
Reporting to the Director of Legal, Product & Privacy, the Product Counsel will provide hands-on, solutions-oriented legal guidance across product development, advising on legal compliance with privacy, consumer protection, and emerging AI laws You’ll help teams move fast while managing legal and regulatory risk, partnering closely with Product, Engineering, Sales, and Customer Success to launch and scale compliant, customer-ready products. This role is ideal for a strong product counsel , who is comfortable taking a generalist approach in learning new areas of the law, and who thrives in a fast-moving, highly regulated environment and wants to deepen expertise while shaping how products are built.
What you’ll do
- Provide day-to-day legal counsel across Checkr’s products, partnering with Product and Engineering throughout the product lifecycle, from early design through launch and iteration;
- Advise on consumer protection, privacy, and data protection issues impacting Checkr’s products, including FCRA, CCPA/CPRA, GDPR, AI-related risk, and related global frameworks, with guidance calibrated for product maturity and use case;
- Partner with Sales and Customer Success to respond to customer inquiries, support strategic deals, and explain product compliance clearly and credibly to external stakeholders;
- Monitor regulatory developments, enforcement trends, and litigation affecting Checkr’s products and act as a thought leader, turning complex developments into actionable guidance for product teams and customers;
- Contribute to scaling the Product & Privacy legal function by improving processes, templates, and playbooks that help the team move faster and reduce friction.
What you bring
- J.D. from an accredited law school and admission to at least one U.S. bar;
- 7+ years of experience practicing law, with meaningful experience in product counseling, privacy, consumer protection and/or technology law (in-house experience strongly preferred);
- Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with product and engineering teams and deliver clear, actionable legal guidance to non-lawyers;
- Experience learning and understanding the complexities of highly regulated products;
- Ability to calibrate risk based on business objectives and stage of product, approaching legal counseling with a solutions-based response;
- Deep knowledge of consumer protection laws, global privacy frameworks, and product risk management, with a curiosity to deepen expertise in emerging areas such as AI and data governance;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts in a concise, approachable way; and
- A collaborative mindset, ownership mentality, and desire to grow within a scaling legal team.

We use geographic cost of labor as an input to develop ranges for our roles and as such, each location where we hire may have a different range. At Checkr, we believe a hybrid work environment strengthens collaboration, drives innovation, and encourages connection. Our hub locations are Denver, CO, San Francisco, CA, Nashville, TN, and Santiago, Chile. Individuals are expected to work from the office 3 days a week. In-office perks are provided, such as lunch five times a week, a commuter stipend, and an abundance of snacks and beverages. A relocation stipend may be available for those willing to relocate to a Checkr hub location.
