About the Company

General Matter is enriching uranium in America.

Our mission is to restore our country’s ability to make nuclear fuel. Our fuel will help power AI, manufacturing, and other critical industries. It will power our next generation of reactors. Ultimately, it will power our national ambitions.

We were incubated by Founders Fund, like Anduril and Palantir before us, and we are backed by top tier investors.

Our lean, world-class team of engineers and operators is applying a first-principles approach to solving the problem of nuclear fuel production.

We are a mission-driven company with a culture of urgency, accountability and transparency.

Enrichment Plant Process Engineer

General Matter is seeking a Nuclear Enrichment Plant Process Engineer to lead the conceptual architecture, layout, and design of complex process systems for uranium enrichment facilities. This role requires expertise in nuclear fuel cycle operations, particularly in the design and integration of UF₆ (uranium hexafluoride) systems. The ideal candidate will combine strong process engineering fundamentals with the ability to architect large-scale systems, ensuring safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance in advanced nuclear energy production.

Responsibilities:

  • Architect and design process flow and system layouts for enrichment facilities, including complex piping and instrumentation networks.
  • Develop and review P&ID diagrams, process schematics, and system-level design documents for UF₆ handling and enrichment operations.
  • Collaborate on conceptual and detailed engineering for vacuum systems, compressors, heat exchangers, and other critical components in enrichment plants.
  • Provide technical leadership in process safety, nuclear safety, and high-hazard system design.
  • Support process modeling, simulation, and optimization for enrichment operations.
  • Prepare and present engineering documentation, including design requirements, specifications, and operational procedures.
  • Participate in technical design reviews, offering insights on system integration and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams—mechanical, chemical, nuclear engineers, operations, and external partners—to ensure cohesive system architecture.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field. Advanced degrees (MS, PhD) may substitute for experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in nuclear fuel cycle operations, enrichment plant design, or similar high-hazard environments.
  • Strong understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, and process control.
  • Demonstrated experience with P&ID development and system-level engineering design.
  • Familiarity with UF₆ handling and enrichment processes, including safety and regulatory considerations.
  • Excellent communication skills for conveying complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience in architecting large-scale process systems for nuclear or chemical facilities.
  • Proficiency with process modeling tools and simulation software.
  • Knowledge of vacuum systems, cryogenics, compressible flow, and advanced chemical processing.
  • Prior involvement in conceptual design phases for enrichment or similar facilities.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment, balancing technical rigor with practical constraints.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.

Equal Opportunity Employer
