About LUUM
LUUM is revolutionizing beauty through the power of robotics, artificial intelligence, and skilled artistry. We've developed a first-of-its-kind robotic system for applying eyelash extensions—bringing advanced technology to an industry where precision, artistry, and personalization are key. Our team brings together experienced engineers, skilled lash artists, and serial entrepreneurs, all united by a shared mission: to combine innovative technology with beauty expertise to deliver an exceptional experience for every client.
About the Role:
We are seeking a computer vision & machine learning engineer to develop vision algorithms for our beauty experience automation. This role is critical to enabling fast and accurate detection, tracking, and classification in a novel consumer service environment. This is a hands-on role: you will select and adapt state-of-the-art methods and apply them to our custom built, high speed four manipulator robotic system.
The LUUM Robots feature an array of highly customized actuation and machine vision – both classical and neural network based – to precisely manipulate and attach the tiny extension fibers onto natural eyelashes. In more than eight years of development, we’ve assembled many of the pieces of this difficult puzzle – enough to provide real services to thousands of paying repeat customers – and now we’re looking to expand our team to advance the technology even further. Our newly deployed fourth generation sytem includes more actuated degrees of freedom and far more autonomy than leading surgical robots, producing an array of engineering challenges unique in the field.

Key Responsibilites

  • Develop computer vision and perception software in support of beauty experiences such as eyelash extensions.
  • Design algorithms for detection, tracking, pose estimation, 3D reconstruction, and world modeling in space-relevant conditions.
  • Select, adapt, and deploy state-of-the-art methods for our mission profiles.
  • Maintain the software stack for robustness, scalability, and iteration speed; define coding standards and best practices.
  • Work hands-on in C++ and Python to prototype, implement, and optimize algorithms.
  • Perform software-in-the-loop (SIL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing to validate performance and robustness.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, robotics, and systems engineers to tightly integrate vision solutions into hardware.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with a specialization in ML or computer vision.
  • Strong programming fundamentals and proficiency in at least one language in addition to Python (e.g., C++, Rust, CUDA) with proficiency in ML frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar.
  • Comfortable working in larger, evolving codebases with version control (Git), testing, and CI/CD.
  • Solid understanding of modern CV architectures and methods
  • Experience in shipping significant CV/ML systems in production (i.e., robotics or similar complex systems such as autonomous vehicles).
  • Strong programming skills in Python and C++, with evidence of ownership of substantial features.
  • Experience working in Linux environments and with modern development workflows (Git, code reviews, testing).
  • Passionate about machine learning, computer vision, and robotics.
  • Ability and willingness to work on-site in Oakland, CA.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in stereoscopic vision.
  • Demonstrated experience taking projects from concept through implementation, testing, and deployment.
  • Able to explain the hardest problems you solved, how you evaluated success, and how you handled the gap between theory and implementation.
  • Open-minded, collaborative, and a cross-functional team player.
  • Energized by new ideas and able to iterate on them constructively.
  • Lifelong learner with genuine curiosity .
  • Able to stay abreast of research and technology in computer vision and ML.
  • Value transparency, candid communication, and working through hard problems with small collaborative teams.
